All righty, so here's my custom figures thread. So far it's all just ideas, but they will be completed eventually. In fact, I'll use this post as a way of checking off what's done and what's not.

It's a hell of a list, and it's not in order of priority either.

UPDATE 3-11-2010: Removed non-DC figures from list and made a thread for them in the appropriate forum, and added some more DC ideas.
Nearly done with Bizarro Yellow Lantern, just need to throw him back together and clear coat when it's less humid here.
Hal head from Kyle head halfway painted.
DCUC Golden Age Ray nearly complete, have to repaint many areas due to damage from reassembly.
Still stuck on how to do JLU Lobo hair.

Just so you know, an actual Sinestro Corps Sinestro has already been made by Mattel in the JLU line and there are some great Holiday Hal Jordan head casts you could use to make a Hal Jordan. Good luck with all those too....that's quite a list.

Hah, I forgot to take that Sinestro off the list. This came from my organizational list to make sure I had all the figures I needed. I have nearly all the base figures grouped and ready to go. I've had the Sinestro Corps. Sinestro since he came out last year. Thanks for the heads up, though.

As far as the Hal goes, I don't want the same thing everyone else has. I'm very much into uniqueness, and I'd rather make my own head so that I can be proud to say it's my custom, not just a cast of an existing mold I bought and plopped onto another body. I'm glad I could get a mold if I wanted, and I appreciate it. I actually have the head done, just not painted yet. I'm waiting til I finish the Lobo before I start painting.

i like your custom recipes and your overall vision of future customs! but you simply gotsta have a holiday hal jordan in your collection! you gotta, even if you dont even diaplay it, even if you keep it in a cupboard or even bury it in the garden, you must own one! its CJ law! haha. only joking.

im interested to see your take on lobo. lobos always been top of my list on wants from mattel (although i doubt we will ever get one, because of the "we will never make one of him because of how violent he is blah blah situation!) grrrrrrr

be good to see different versions of him aswel!

Thanks, stjuggernaut! If it's CJ law, then shouldn't I be issued a Holiday Hal? What are my fees going towards then? Mwahahahaaa...

I feel the same way about Mattel's choice on the matter. They could have at least done some kind of SDCC exclusive like the DCUC Lobo. Ah well, no biggie. Here's the almost latest progress photo of the Lobo figure:

Since then I strengthened and redefined the chin, but that cardboard base sculpey hair idea fell through. Sculpey's great for small details, but sucks for large pieces, like hair, even if it's done in stages. No biggie, I'll figure out how to create the hair one way or another. I'm thinking of going the epoxy putty route now. I even went so far as to consider getting some Super Sayain 3 hair, but nixed it. I like doing things from scratch, and a challenge is always fun to overcome.

So my previous ideas for creating the hair fell through. I took a breather from the hair and really strengthened and defined his chin, instead of it being just a simple rectangle sticking off of his face. As for the hair, my next attempt will be a Styrofoam base, then sculpey on top of that. I did manage to find the perfectly shaped wall hook to make his hook out of. Admittedly, it is a bit smaller than I would have liked, but the shape was nearly perfect and took very little grinding to come out how I wanted it.

Thanks for the kind words, Jester. Wink

sorry Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Styrofoam will melt when you cure the sculpy, most likely leading to a big ol' (potentially toxic) mess.
I would recommend using wire and/or aluminum foil to form the base instead.

I would suggest doing the hair in layers. Sculpt some locks then harden. Go back and build on top and harden again. Anyway you go about it is critical with Lobo. His hair is what stands out the most with this character.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips on the hair, jon and Quartermain. I cure my sculpey by boiling it, rather than baking. Would the Styrofoam still melt during the boiling process? My original plan was the wire and foil method as while curing in stages, but I kept breaking the tips off the hair which caused much frustration. That's when I turned to 'foam. I suppose I'll do a test boil/cure to see if it melts, and go from there. If not, I will revisit the foil and wire method, and just be more patient with it this time around. It's just exciting being nearly done with the sculpting, and it's hard to wait for it to be finished. Wink

*snaps fingers* OH! I got it, I think! Going along with what you said, Q, about sculpting locks then hardening it... perhaps if I were to sculpt about a dozen spikey locks as separate pieces and cure them, then sculpt a hair base on the head to stick them into and cure as well, then smooth out whatever gaps may be left from that process and cure that out! That seems like a good direction to go in.

I am pretty sure that boiling styrofoam will result in the same situation - a potentially toxic mess.  I would not recommend it.  If you do, make sure all your windows are open and fans are running.  I would also suggest using some type of facemask as a precaution.

I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong, and I know there are some styrofoam products that can be microwaved.  But those are specifically designed for that, and personally I'd rather not take the chance.  Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go mix some bleach and brake fluid.
